HOUSTON (September 30, 2011) – Mobil Steel International, Inc. sponsored the Petrochemical & Maritime Outlook Conference attended by 500 customers, suppliers and vendors dependent on petrochemical and maritime industries. The attendees heard the president and CEO of the Port of Houston and plant managers from local industry share forecasts for capital investment and maintenance projects that will position local refineries and chemical plants as well as the Port of Houston for continued growth. The crowd also heard federal and state elected officials pledge to create a positive economic and regulatory environment for continued growth of the port, business and industries in the Houston Port Region.
Harris County Judge Ed Emmett reminded the group during a luncheon keynote that it is important that the region, led by Harris County, begin to provide infrastructure needed to support the growing demand of the port of Houston, the ship channel industry and other businesses and industries that need improved rail, roads and bridges. “Our region’s future is tied to global trade. We must take steps now to assure our destiny as ‘The Gateway of North America’,” Emmett said.
“It is refreshing to hear the port, the industry and our elected leaders, like Judge Emmett, discuss infrastructure growth that is needed in the region,” said Leonard A. Bedell. “Mobil Steel is ready to fabricate the steel that will be needed as we rebuild the region’s infrastructure and prepare for greater growth and prosperity in the years ahead.”
Bedell, Mobil Steel’s president and CEO, and the company’s new sales manager, Bruce Kenner, served as silver level sponsor-hosts for the event. The outlook conference kicked off with a boat tour of the Houston Ship Channel and the Port of Houston’s Bayport Terminals the evening before presentations from maritime and petrochemical industry leaders.
Bedell and Kenner were joined at the Mobil Steel table by Texas state representative Randy Weber, Pearland mayor Tom Reid, and Houston city council member Mike Sullivan, as well as several Mobil Steel business partners and customers. Mobil Steel is a member of the Economic Alliance Houston Port Region. The Port of Houston Authority was the presenting sponsor of the economic outlook conference.
